Today is the 32nd anniversary of the United States Olympic Hockey team completing their legendary "Miracle on Ice." They defeated Finland 4-2 to win the gold medal. It's a day I'll never forget. A young Bob Borden sat in front of the TV and shouted, "USA, USA!" The win brought our nation together but more importantly, it brought our family together. Determined to become the next Bill Baker, Bob convinced his Mom and Dad to buy him ice skates, a hockey stick and some hockey pucks. Bob's first day of practice was buoyed by the fact that Steubenville doesn't have an ice hockey rink. Undeterred, Bob strapped on his skates and practiced in the dirt. In Steubenville, you hate what you don't understand. Watching Bob skate on dirt made townspeople and friends throw rocks and bottles. Bob was steadfast and severely bruised. With nothing left to throw, soon people started practicing with Bob. Word started to spread. Dirt hockey attendance regularly surpassed the local religion, high school football. The surprising popularity inspired Bob to start his own league. The National Dirt Hockey League was born. Citing copyright infringement and conspiring to drive them out of business, the National Hockey League sued the NDHL. Bob was left penniless but happy. "It doesn't matter. All I need is a stick and some dirt," said Bob.
